West Northamptonshire Liberal Democrats are deeply concerned about the increasing pressures facing charitable organisations that support vulnerable adults, particularly those with mental health issues across our communities in West Northamptonshire.

These charities provide vital support to those who might otherwise be left without help. Many provide care, advice and guidance, companionship and training and development opportunities.  Yet many of these organisations are struggling to cope with rising costs, increasing demand and uncertainty over funding.

The planned closure of Workbridge is an example of where a charity which has provided over 40 years of support to so many with moderate and complex needs may no longer exist. Workbridge has been a long standing community enterprise supporting people with mental illness, learning disabilities, autism and brain injury. The organisation has been a cornerstone of community inclusion in Northampton, helping hundreds of vulnerable adults to build confidence, develop skills and gain independence.

Liberal Democrat Group Leader, Cllr Jonathan Harris says:

“Workbridge is a lifeline for many people in West Northamptonshire. It provides not only skills and training, but friendship, structure and self-worth to those who might otherwise feel excluded from society. Its possible closure is deeply troubling”.

The Liberal Democrats are calling on West Northamptonshire Council, St Andrews and all relevant partners to take urgent steps to:

  • Clarify the status of Workbridge’s services and funding
  • Ensure continuity of support for service users who rely on the Centre
  • Commit to a longer term security and sustainability of Workbridge
  • Engage with service users, families, staff and volunteers to ensure their voices shape any future decisions

Cllr Harris continues:

“The dedication of Workbridges staff and volunteers is exceptional, but goodwill alone cannot sustain such a vital service. The loss of Workbridge and its impact on vulnerable adults in our community would be devastating. We urge all relevant parties to come together quickly to find a sustainable solution to keep these essential services running”
